Julian Assange Granted New Australian Passport

Julian Assange is to be granted a new Australian passport. The Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed in the Senate on Thursday that the fugitive founder of WikiLeaks is entitled to this.

That conclusion was long overdue because it had to be investigated whether an arrest warrant was still in force against Assange because of a “serious offense abroad.”

Assange can with his new passport in principle travel back to Australia, but whether that will actually happen depends on the British justice.

At this moment, he is still holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Should he leave the premises, he risks being arrested by UK authorities at the demand of the US.
