The sudden closure of Pakistani airspace due to rising tensions with neighboring India over the disputed border region of Kashmir, has caused Thai Airways to cancel all flights to and from Europe on Wednesday evening and Thursday.
It involves dozens of flights to and from London, Munich, Paris, Milan, Vienna, Stockholm, Zurich, Copenhagen, Oslo, Frankfurt, Rome. Thai Airways looks at alternative flight paths.
It is expected that air traffic will also be affected in other Southeast Asian countries soon.
Due to the cancellations, thousands of passengers were also stranded at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport. “We currently have around 5,000 passengers who could not leave,” says politics colonel Umnart Chomshai. In the meantime, an emergency center for the stranded passengers was opened at the airport.
