The mass protests against a possible fifth term for President-For-Life Bouteflika (81 years old) are turning ever more grim. The Algerian capital Algiers was met with its biggest anti-government demonstration in more than eight years Friday as crowds of young and old chanted “bye, bye Bouteflika” and “peaceful, peaceful.”

Security sources said “several tens of thousands” had taken part as police helicopters circled overhead although youngsters on social media claimed the protesters were with at least one hundred thousand.

Furthermore, large crowds also gathered in major cities such as Oran, Tizi Ouzou and Constantine. Algeria holds elections on April 18.

Most European nations are looking at France, of whom Algeria is a former colony, for guidance as to how to react, but of course the French President Mr Macron is himself also met with repeated protests.
