‘K-Pop King’ Leaves Band Over ‘Providing Prostitutes’ Allegations

You may not have noticed, but one of the worldwide trending keywords on social media yesterday was BigBang. I understand that you are then thinking of the television series, but you would be wrong. The reason why BigBang was trending yesterday is because it is also the name of a K-Pop band which sold about 140 million records worldwide.

The band, comparable to the size of Backstreet Boys or Take That but then in Asia, is known as the “Kings of K-pop.”

One of its founding members, a man known as Seungri, announced yesterday he is retiring from the band (bit young at 28 to retire but what the heck) as the controversy of ‘sex bribery’ allegations had become too big.

Seungri, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun is under investigation for having provided ‘prostitutes’ to early investors of the band. Given that prostitution is illegal in South Korea, the scandal surrounding him had only grown over time.

He sent out a statement to fans and assured everyone he would ‘sincerely participate in investigations into all allegations.’

‘I have faced heavy criticism from the public for the last month and-a-half and I’m being probed by all investigative authorities in the country. As I’ve been branded as a ‘national traitor’, I cannot stand the fact that I’m harming others for my own sake.’
